Devotional: Jesus, Our Wonderful Counselor
A companion to the sermon series “He Shall Be Called” by Stephen Saxton.
Key Scripture:
Isaiah 9:6 – "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
Reflection:
In Isaiah 9:6, we are introduced to four profound names for Jesus, and each reveals an essential aspect of His role in our lives. As our Wonderful Counselor, Jesus offers unparalleled wisdom and guidance. This isn’t just about knowledge but about insight that transforms our lives, leading us to safety, healing, and purpose. Unlike human advisors, Jesus knows us intimately—our thoughts, struggles, and desires—and His guidance is perfect, rooted in His love for us and His understanding of eternity.
The idea of Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor comes alive in Luke 6:46-49, where He compares those who follow His teachings to a wise builder who constructs a house on solid rock. Life’s storms—whether sudden and unforeseen or the consequences of our own actions—are inevitable. Jesus doesn’t promise to shield us from the storms but assures us that when we follow His words, we will stand firm. His counsel becomes the foundation that keeps us secure, no matter how fierce the winds or torrential the rain.
But what does it look like to heed His counsel? It starts with trust—believing that Jesus’s way is better than our own, even when it’s countercultural or challenges our instincts. Loving our enemies (Matthew 5:44), forgiving those who hurt us (Matthew 6:14-15), or choosing humility over pride (Philippians 2:3-4) can feel unnatural or even impossible. Yet, these teachings lead to freedom, healing, and peace when we obey them.
It’s also important to recognize that the storms in our lives take different forms. Some are external—unexpected diagnoses, job losses, or relationship betrayals. Others are internal, brewing from our choices, attitudes, or neglect of God’s ways. Jesus’s teachings not only prepare us for the external challenges but also guard us from self-inflicted pain. For example, choosing to honor God with our finances, relationships, and time can prevent many of the hardships that come from ignoring His wisdom.
Jesus’s words are not burdensome religious rules; they are life-giving truths meant for our good. John 3:17 reminds us that Jesus came not to condemn the world but to save it. His instructions are like a parent guiding a child away from danger. He doesn’t demand obedience for His benefit but offers it for ours, ensuring we can build lives that endure and thrive even in adversity.
This Christmas season, reflect on Jesus as your Wonderful Counselor. Where is He calling you to trust Him more deeply? What areas of your life need the firm foundation of His wisdom? Let His counsel guide you, not just in the storms but in the everyday moments, so your life reflects the peace and stability only He can provide.
