Devotional: Mighty God

A companion to the sermon series “He Shall Be Called”

Reflection

Death is a reality that no one can escape. From the moment we are born, the clock of our mortality ticks onward. It can feel overwhelming to acknowledge the inevitability of death, but as Christians, we find hope in Jesus Christ, the Mighty God, who came to rescue us not only from sin but also from death itself.

In John 8:58, Jesus makes a powerful declaration: “Before Abraham was born, I am.” This statement affirms His divinity and eternal existence, echoing God's self-revelation to Moses in Exodus 3:14 as “I AM.” By claiming this name, Jesus assures us that He is more than a prophet or teacher—He is the eternal God with power over life and death.

Death, as we know it, wins over every human effort. It’s the great equalizer, claiming the rich, poor, young, and old alike. But Jesus’ promise in John 8:51 transforms our understanding of death: “Whoever obeys my word will never see death.” While our physical bodies may die, Jesus assures us that our spirits will never experience the sting of eternal death. Instead, those who trust in Him will move directly into His presence.

Through His death on the cross and resurrection, Jesus broke the power of death and guaranteed eternal life for those who believe. As believers, we are no longer slaves to fear or sin. Instead, we are adopted as God’s children, given the full rights of sons and daughters in His household.

At Christmas, we celebrate more than Jesus’ birth. We celebrate His mission as Mighty God to free us from death’s grip, to transform us from slaves to children, and to secure our eternal home. Jesus’ promise of life is not just for the future—it’s for today. In Him, we are free to live without fear, knowing death has been defeated.

Questions for Reflection

  1. How does Jesus’ statement, “Before Abraham was born, I am,” deepen your understanding of His identity as God?

  2. What fears about death or the unknown have you wrestled with? How does Jesus’ victory over death give you hope?

  3. Reflect on what it means to be adopted into God’s family. How does this truth impact your daily life?

  4. Are there areas in your life where you’re still living as a “slave” instead of as a child of God? How can you surrender those to Jesus?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus, our Mighty God, who conquered sin and death on our behalf. We praise You for the assurance that, through Him, we will never truly see death but will live forever in Your presence. Teach us to live as Your sons and daughters, freed from fear and filled with hope. Help us to share this good news with those around us, especially during this season of celebrating Your great gift. Open our hearts to trust You more deeply, and remind us daily that death has no power over us because of Jesus.

In His mighty name,
Amen.
