Devotional: Living as the Light of the World

A companion resource for the "Life on Mission" sermon series: Part 3

A 93-year-old woman spotted a man outside her home working on his bicycle. He was a Chinese traveler who spoke little English, riding across the United States. Instead of ignoring him or hesitating, she welcomed him in. She offered him a meal, a shower, and a place to rest. When he asked her why she would do something so generous, her answer was simple and powerful: “Jesus keeps telling me to help you.”

Her response captures what it means to live as the light of the world. She didn’t act out of obligation or for recognition but out of a heart transformed by Christ. This kind of love is what Jesus calls us to—a life that points others to Him.

In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus reminds us, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Being the light isn’t about having all the answers or living perfectly. It’s about letting Jesus shine through our actions. We glorify Him by stepping out in faith, serving others, and showing kindness in ways that point to His love. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, encouraging a friend, or simply being available to someone in need, our good deeds reflect the goodness of God.

Like the elderly woman, are we willing to listen when Jesus nudges us? Are we open to serving others in ways that may feel inconvenient but glorify Him?

Scripture for Study

  • Matthew 5:14-16“You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

  • John 8:12“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

  • Ephesians 5:8-9“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth).”

Questions for Reflection

  1. What does it mean to you to be the “light of the world”?

  2. Can you think of a time when someone’s kindness or faith inspired you to see God more clearly?

  3. How can you let your light shine in a practical way this week—at work, at home, or in your community?

  4. Are there areas in your life where you feel hesitant to let Jesus shine through? Why?

Further Study

  • Genesis 1:3-4 – The origin of light in creation, where God declares, “Let there be light.” Reflect on how God’s light drives out darkness, both physically and spiritually.

  • John 1:4-5 – Jesus is described as the life that brings light to humanity, a light the darkness cannot overcome. Consider how this connects to your purpose as His follower.

  • Philippians 2:14-16 – Encouragement to live without grumbling or arguing, shining like stars in the world.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me to be the light of the world. I know I can’t produce light on my own, but I surrender my heart to You so that Your light can shine through me. Help me to see opportunities to serve and care for others in ways that glorify You. Give me the courage to step out in faith and kindness, even when it feels inconvenient or risky. May my life point others to Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Take a moment to ask Jesus to show you where He wants you to shine this week. Then trust Him to guide you, and let your light point others to His glory.
